If you’re going to be in Boston over the summer—or going to be somewhere with consistent access to phone and internet—Steercom would love to have your help to make calls to worksites, do worksite visits, help arrange for speakers and help arrange for food donations.

Manage the FUP Alumni Database!
FUP is interested in putting together a database of our alumni, recent and ancient, so that we can call upon them to be speakers at FUP week, do workshops during the year and otherwise serve as
resources for the FUP community. We’re looking for one or a few people to take considerable initiative and manage this project fairly independently.
To get FUP networked, copy and paste this link [file:///Users/taravenkatraman/Downloads/fup09%20future%20involvement.pdf] in a new tab for the form to fill out and send back in by February 14, 2008 at 5 p.m.

Join the January FUP Working Group!
The new J-Term/Jan Plan/whatever the kids are calling it these days leaves lots of room for exciting possibilities for a repeat FUP or an entirely unique J-Term FUP. Though no one knows whether a J-Term FUP is even feasible, it’s something many members of the FUP community should have input in, and so you can sign-up to be part of a working group of faculty, staff, students and alums who will advise and consider this possibility.
To share your J-Term genius, copy and paste this link [file:///Users/taravenkatraman/Downloads/fup09%20future%20involvement.pdf] in a new tab for the FUP 2009 General Involvement Form. You'll be asked to write a paragraph on your vision for J-Term FUP; please send it in by February 14, 2008 at 5 p.m.

Host Weekend Warriors!
While FUP has little formal programming during the year, Steercom and leaders do host a variety of events (ideally once every two weeks) to continue the momentum of FUP and maintain the sense of community. These events range from brunch to movie watching to Advising Night to FUP or Treat (trick-or-treating to freshmen rooms in the Yard). This is something we’d like FUPpies and FUP alums to get involved with, so if you’re interested in hosting an event once or a few times over the course of the semester, let us know!

Apply to be a Steercom Member!
If you have done FUP before, either as a FUPpie or a leader, and care deeply about strengthening the program during FUP week itself and during the year, we invite you to apply to be on the Steering Committee for FUP '09-'10. The major requirement is that all new Steering Committee members commit to be in Boston over the summer; the time committment is about 15 hours a week through the last two weeks in June, 20 hours a week through July, and sheer madness in the first two weeks of August.
The process for applying is different than applying to be a leader. If you're interested in being a Steercom member, we ask that you fill out this Steercom Interest Questionaire [Copy & paste this link in a new tab {file:///Users/taravenkatraman/Downloads/fup09%20steercom%20application.pdf}] and then e-mail it to us as soon as possible, preferably before February 14 when leader applications come in. A few members of Steercom will then sit down and have a conversation with you in early February.
As always, don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions: fup@fas.harvard.edu.

Apply to be a FUP Leader!
If you care about creating an incredible community of students who are passionate about service, activism and social justice work of all kinds, apply to be a FUP leader! We are looking for a diverse and fabulous crew of leaders for FUP 2009.
What is FUP?
The First-Year Urban Program is a week-long orientation to communities and community service opportunities in Cambridge and Boston for incoming first-year undergraduates (FUPpies). FUP supports and challenges FUPpies to look beyond the walls of Harvard and to see the issues that affect the urban community in which they will be spending their next four years. FUPpies, accompanied by experienced sophomore, junior, and senior student leaders and mentors, work with Cambridge and Boston area community members, the leaders of neighborhood service and activist organizations, and the leaders of the College's public service community. FUP's mission is threefold: to aid grass-roots organizations in local communities; to catalyze the FUPpies' involvement in service and activism while at the College; and to orient the new students to Harvard, Cambridge, and Boston, while providing them with the opportunity to meet peers who share with them an interest in public service and activism.
What do FUP leaders do?
The responsibilities of a FUP leader are numerous. All leaders are required to arrive back at Harvard by Sunday, August 16th, 2009, to undergo a four-and-a-half day training period, during which time the full schedule of FUP 2007 will be explained. Leaders are split into groups of two or three and assigned a group of six to nine FUPpies. Each group works at a different project site around Cambridge and Boston. In past years, project sites have included Fair Foods in Dorchester, the Hawthorne Youth Community Center in Roxbury, and the AIDS Action Committee in JP. Work at the sites ranges from painting and cleaning to voter registration to food preparation and weeding. During the evenings, all of the groups come back together at Harvard, where we will hear from speakers and participate in activities. Leaders are also responsible for facilitating conversations on issues of service, activism, and social justice based on readings assigned to the FUPpies. In general, leaders are expected to share their experiences with FUPpies and to serve as mentors for the first-year students in their groups.
What kind of people are you looking for to be FUP leaders?
We are looking for a whole range of people with a diversity of experiences. In particular, we are looking for individuals who have displayed a strong commitment to service and activism and who are able to think critically about the issues involved in such commitments. We also want people who are open and enthusiastic, and who desire to get to know and be a resource for first-year students in their difficult transition process.
Can I be a FUP leader if I never did FUP?
Absolutely!!! Many great FUP leaders were never FUPpies. Please let us know if you’d like to talk with any of them about their experiences as upperclassmen new to FUP. And remember, the FUP Steering Committee is always glad to talk about FUP with all prospective leaders.
How can I become a FUP leader?
E-mail us or copy and paste this link for the application [file:///Users/taravenkatraman/Desktop/fup09%20leader%20app.pdf] and drop it off at the FDO or email it to fup@fas.harvard.edu by 5 p.m. on Saturday February 14, 2009. We'll get back to you to schedule an interview and decisions should be made by just before spring break. If you would like to know more about FUP, contact us at fup@hcs.harvard.edu.
